We present a modern-style apartment with a total area of 40.65 sq. m, including 34.5 sq. m of living space, a 3.7 sq. m bathroom, and a 2.5 sq. m balcony.
The main goal was to stay within a budget of $22,000–$25,000, including renovation costs. Therefore, all furniture—except for the chairs and bed—was custom-made in Kyiv based on a design by Natalia Poplavskaya.
The first thing that catches your eye as soon as you walk in is the unconventional floor plan. Small apartments are a real challenge. You need to retain all the functionality, just as you would in a larger space. Plus, there are budget constraints. It’s worth noting that when we submitted our redesign (a layout change during the construction phase) to the sales department, the developer showed our redesign option to prospective buyers, and these were the first apartments to sell
A compact kitchen, yet fully equipped (built-in refrigerator, 45 cm dishwasher, cooktop, oven, sink, dish rack, pull-out cutlery drawers, built-in range hood), is located in the hallway. The upper cabinet fronts are made of painted MDF, and the lower ones of textured particleboard.
Thus, from the doorway, we immediately enter the living room-studio.
Natalia Poplavskaya is skilled at working with a variety of budgets. But how do you create a budget-friendly interior that looks expensive? Not every designer possesses this skill. The key here is to understand that if you furnish the entire space with inexpensive items, you’ll never achieve a stylish, designer-quality interior. Therefore, in such interiors, you need to set priorities, allocate the budget wisely, and identify the key elements that will, as we say, “define the design.” The interior items and elements that will serve as focal points—these fall outside the budget. You need to splurge on them! One such element in this interior is a round table, whose tabletop is crafted from expensive natural wood-grain marble by the firm Shid-Zahid. The metal base for the table was custom-made. We’ve written quite a bit about the popularity and convenience of round tables in other posts on our page. In this interior, the round table perfectly divides the space, separating the kitchen area from the lounge area.
The most striking feature of this interior is the mirrors, which beautifully reflect the furnishings and make the space feel more open.
The popular black-and-white color scheme and gray tones are softened by the natural wood textures on the floor and furniture fronts. The interior is very high-contrast. The entire color scheme was designed to complement a large-format painting measuring 130 by 110 cm. The author of the painting “Spring in the City Park” is the designer of this interior. The popular marine shades seen in the painting dominate the interior. The painting is complemented by marine-colored walls in the kitchen and dining area, as well as a sofa in a trendy velour finish. The interior is further enhanced and decorated by modern, simple-shaped moldings, a new product from Orac Decor. In addition to their aesthetic functions, the moldings on the walls also effectively highlight key areas of the interior.
Metal supports were fabricated for the custom furniture (a chest of drawers in the bedroom, a console table by the entrance, a TV stand, a round table, and a set of two coffee tables). We also installed an openwork decorative wall shelf at the end of the kitchen. Upon entering the apartment, the decor on the shelf draws attention rather than the countertop. The white metal rods stand out beautifully against the dark background.
A bedroom has been set up in the space formerly occupied by the kitchen, which measures 11.64 square meters. Despite its modest size, it manages to accommodate a double bed, a large, spacious wardrobe, and a dresser.
The bathroom continues the color scheme of the entire apartment. Hidden behind this folding door are some less-than-aesthetic items: a water heater, a washing machine, a mop, and other household essentials.

A turquoise accent runs throughout the property in the decor and finishes.
